In the heart of Marsabit County, where electricity is often scarce and unreliable, the Karare Women Dairy and Marketing Cooperative faced a critical challenge: keeping milk fresh between the village collection point and distant markets.
Recognizing this hurdle, Pastoralists Peoples’ Initiative (PPI) provided the cooperative with a robust electric generator; transforming the way these women process, store, and market their dairy products.
How the Generator Is Changing the Game
- Consistent Milk Cooling
Before the generator, cooperative members had to transport raw milk under the harsh sun or rely on intermittent grid power, leading to spoilage and income loss. Now, the generator powers electric coolers and insulated milk cans at the collection hub, ensuring every liter stays below the critical 4 °C threshold until it’s loaded for transport. - Extended Processing Hours
With reliable electricity, the cooperative can operate churning and yogurt‐making equipment well into the evening. This flexibility allows members to balance herding and household duties during daylight and still produce value‐added products after sunset, boosting daily output by an estimated 30%. - Enhanced Product Quality
Powered filtration units now run uninterrupted, removing impurities and extending yogurt shelf‐life from just two days to up to five. Likewise, the electric stove heats milk evenly for ghee production, resulting in a purer, more consistent product that commands higher prices at market. - Digital Record‐Keeping & Communications
The generator also runs a laptop and mobile‐device charging station, enabling cooperative officers to maintain up‐to‐date digital records of production volumes, sales, and expenses. Real‐time mobile messaging with buyers in Nairobi means orders can be placed and confirmed without delays.
These practical benefits have already translated into measurable gains: spoilage rates have dropped by over 40%, average member incomes have risen by 20%, and Karare’s opening market orders have doubled.
PPI’s Future Plans: Seeking Your Support
To build on this success, PPI is mobilizing additional resources. We invite partners to fund the following initiatives, which will further boost Karare’s resilience and growth:
- Technical Training Workshops
- Quality Control & Hygiene: Ensuring every liter of milk meets health standards
- Value-Addition Techniques: Introducing solar-powered drying for ghee and advanced filtration for longer-lasting yogurts
- Record-Keeping & Financial Literacy: Simple, yet powerful tools for cooperative members to track production volumes, expenses, and profits
- Equipment Grants
- Solar-powered milk cans and coolers to complement the generator and reduce fuel costs
- Stainless-steel churns and sealed containers for safer butter and ghee production
- Branded packaging materials to give Karare products a distinct, marketable identity
- Market Linkages
- Facilitating introductions to Nairobi-based dairy buyers and fair-trade shops
- Coordinating participation in regional trade fairs, where Karare can showcase their products to new audiences
- Negotiating pilot orders with cooperative grocery chains to include Karare’s butter and yogurt on their shelves

By investing in these critical areas, partners will enable the Karare Women Dairy and Marketing Cooperative not only to maintain its newfound momentum but to scale up and replicate this model across Marsabit and beyond.
Together with reliable power at their fingertips and targeted support on the horizon; these remarkable women will continue to lead Kenya’s pastoralist transformation.
“Thanks to the generator from PPI, our milk stays fresh, our equipment runs day and night, and our dreams feel within reach.”
