Documenting and revitalizing traditional ecological wisdom to nurture sustainable futures. In collaboration with community elders and knowledge holders, we record rituals, land-use techniques, and oral histories at risk of being lost. Our work bridges generations - honoring cultural heritage while empowering pastoralists to adapt to tomorrow’s challenges.

About PPI

The Pastoralist Peoples’ Initiative (PPI) is a Kenyan charity dedicated to empowering indigenous pastoralist communities through advocacy, knowledge preservation, and equitable development. Founded in 2023, we mobilize resources, partner with grassroots leaders, and champion self-determined futures.

Empower Pastoralist Women

Cultivate inclusive leadership by offering tailored training in public speaking, negotiation, and community organizing.
Promote economic independence through targeted entrepreneurship support—micro-grants, market linkages, and financial literacy programs.
Advance gender equity by creating safe, culturally respectful spaces for women’s voice and decision-making, ensuring they shape policies that affect their lives.

Champion Secure Tenure Rights

Advocate for full implementation of the Community Land Act, prioritizing pastoralist women who face multiple layers of marginalization.
Facilitate community-driven land mapping and registration workshops, equipping families with the legal knowledge and documentation needed to claim and protect communal lands.
Build strategic alliances with local governments, legal aid networks, and grassroots associations to institutionalize women’s representation in land governance bodies.

Strengthen Indigenous Knowledge Systems

Document, preserve, and revitalize traditional ecological knowledge, recording grazing calendars, medicinal plant use, and water-management practices.
Develop inter generational learning platforms that connect elders and youth through multimedia storytelling, oral history archiving, and community workshops.
Integrate ancestral practices with modern conservation techniques to foster sustainable land management and robust climate-adaptation strategies.

Advocate for Human Rights and Dignified Livelihoods

Serve as a vocal champion for land rights and self-determination, amplifying pastoralist perspectives in county and national policy dialogues.
Partner with community paralegals and advocacy coalitions to provide legal aid, ensure access to justice, and defend against forced evictions.
Promote a dignified standard of living by addressing water access, education, and health equity through coordinated campaigns and stakeholder engagement

Enhance Climate Change Adaptation and Community Resilience

Establish community-based early-warning systems that combine meteorological data with indigenous forecasting methods (e.g., lunar grazing calendars).
Implement sustainable range land restoration projects, rotational grazing models, fodder banks, and native tree nurseries, to arrest land degradation.
Conduct participatory disaster-preparedness training that equip local committees with rapid response protocols, emergency supply distribution plans, and post-crisis recovery frameworks.

Empower Grassroots Organizations

Strengthen the operational capacity of local associations; providing governance training, grant management support, and resource mobilization coaching.
Foster a network of peer learning and collaboration among community-based organizations to share best practices, co-design joint initiatives, and build economies of scale.
Offer mentorship and technical assistance to emerging grassroots leaders, enabling them to design and implement contextually appropriate programs that reflect pastoralist priorities.
